Council Meeting Highlights - June 21, 2023

Mayor DeViet opened the meeting with highlighting the importance of June 21 as the solstice and now as National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to celebrate the heritage, diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada.

The meeting started with the presentation of the 2022 Audited Financial Statements by the municipality’s auditor. The statements were adopted by Council and will be available on the municipal website in the next few weeks.

Patrick Verkley, vice president of the Middlesex Federation of Agriculture, then presented a high-level overview of their activities over the past year and going into 2023. 

In Brief

During the meeting, Council also:

  • Received the May 2023 budget to actuals report.
  • Awarded tenders for the Valleyview Stormwater Management Facility cleanout, construction works for the Risdon Municipal Drain, and slope restoration work related to the Hogs Back Close Storm Sewer.
  • Congratulated Middlesex Centre’s finance team for receiving a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA - USA/Canada) for the 2023 Municipal Budget. This award recognizes municipalities that demonstrate the highest principles of governmental budgeting. It is the second year in a row that Middlesex Centre has received this award.
  • Received an update on the 2024 municipal budget development process, and appointed Cllr Cates and Cllr Berze to the budget working group.
  • Met briefly in closed session to discuss matters related to litigation or potential litigation related to development matter(s). Questions related to closed session meetings may be directed to the Municipal Clerk.

Planning Matters

Sitting as the Committee of Adjustment and then in public meeting, Council received and reviewed a number of consent to sever applications and other planning applications.

Next Council Meeting

The next regularly scheduled Middlesex Centre Council Meeting is set for Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at 9:30am.  Meeting times are subject to change, so please confirm with the meeting agenda when posted.
