Here are a few highlights of sustainability initiatives underway at Middlesex Centre.

Energy Conservation

Municipality of Middlesex Centre is working to conserve and reduce our energy consumption and to manage our demand for energy. We are driven to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings and operations due to rising fuel costs, energy security, and environmental concerns.

Our energy conservation plan looks to reduce energy consumption by 1 percent per year.

Green Builder Program

Middlesex Centre's Green Builder Program recognizes those companies that embrace sustainability in their approach and practices.

Clean and Green Community Clean-up

COVID-19 Update: The Clean and Green Program is on-hold at this time.

The Clean and Green Program sweeps across Middlesex Centre each spring!  The program includes a 20 Minute Make-Over, which encourages businesses and organizations to spend 20 minutes to help pick-up litter in our community. Stay tuned for details.

Green Fleet
Middlesex Centre electric car

In 2018, the Middlesex Centre purchased two 2018 Chevrolet Bolt battery electric vehicles (BEVs) – level three electric vehicles – in response to the municipality's Comprehensive Fleet Review, Analysis and Green Fleet Plan, joining other governments in Canada to include level three electric vehicles in their fleet.

Chevrolet Bolt BEVs with a driving range of approximately 380 km possesses DC fast-charging capabilities, facilitating the vehicle to be fully charged in 45 minutes, is definitely an important improvement on the municipality's fleet.

The municipality currently has over a dozen vehicles and pieces of equipment in its fleet, which includes electric, hybrid, fuel-efficient and alternative fuel vehicles, as well as conventional vehicles with fuel conserving technologies. The Municipality of Middlesex Centre’s Comprehensive Fleet Review, Analysis and Green Fleet Plan aims to choose vehicles and equipment that consume less fuel and emit less greenhouses gases and air pollution, are economically viable, meet the Municipality’s operational requirements, and are sustainable.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

Four (4) electric vehicle charging stations are available at the Komoka Wellness and Recreation Centre.

Net-Zero Emissions Coldstream Fire Station

Learn more about Middlesex Centre' Coldstream Fire Station. Opened in 2017, the building is Canada's first net-zero fire station, and annually generates more electricity than it uses!

Mayors' Monarch Pledge
Mayor Aina DeViet next to Middlesex Centre Main Office Pollinator Garden

In October 2019, Mayor DeViet signed the National Wildlife Federation's Mayors' Monarch Pledge. Through the pledge, Middlesex Centre is committing to create habitat for the monarch butterfly and pollinators, and to educate residents about how they can make a difference at home and in our community.
